Visiting Jeanne d’ Arc

Day 9; Back North again. 110 km

This hotel had rather strange Covid rules; every little ham/cheese/cake etc was covered in plastic. It took quite some time to get an edible sandwich.

Just after nine we were on the road and Es with her saddle soreness far from over was not happy with the extremely bad tarmac in Bourges.

Sunday in France is always tricky, after 11.00 all the bakery shops close and in this part of France restaurants are very hard to find. We stopped at the first  bakery shop and bought pizza and two pieces of flan, the French custard tart. The latter in my opinion being the best cycling food on earth! Stop having sport bars and drinks; just eat this and drink alcohol free beer and you get everywhere.

On the bike we had an easy day, wind finally in the back now and a relatively flat route through the woods all day.

Lunch was being served at 75 km on the side of a fishing pond.

We were in Orleans at 15.30 and had a great entrance over the Loire bridge. Probably the same bridge the English were trying to get hold of when Jeanne d’ Arc arrived on the spot. The city is full of reminders of Jeanne d’ Arc; the windows in the cathedral, street names, statue in the central square etc. Her story looks to be made for Netflix…..

After getting another stamp for Ben’s credentiale in the Cathedral we went to our appartement. It was very difficult to get the tandem through the door but keeping it upright we managed. The theme of this appartement is vintage Tour de France with a very classic racing bike on the wall.

Happy with the stage victory of Sepp Kuss in the Tour as he is riding for a Dutch team we went for dinner in this very lively town. We ended up at a Crêperie and had a good meal.

The city was watching the final of Euro 2021 when we walked home. As I am writing this England is 1-0 up on Italy.
