Day 7; Rest day in Vezelay

Day 7; Rest Day in Vezelay

No alarm this morning but we woke early to get ourselves croissants, pain au chocolat and fresh fruit.

It was difficult not to go for a coffee first, we managed to bypass the streetcafe and do some serieus culture in Vezelay cathedral.

It is a stunning place, the nave is build in a Roman way around 1100 but 65 years later the Gothic period has arrived so the choir is build in a Gothic style.

However, the main attraction are the sculptures on the pillars speaking to you from 1000 years ago.

The church has been on the road to Santiago and has seen many pilgrims passing. The sculptures must have been spectacular to the pilgrims, who could also admire a relic; there is a finger bone of Maria Magdalena on show in the basement.

After the coffee ( around 12.00, the French around us were all ordering white wine….) and lunch it was time for cycling maintenance. I managed to tighten the cassette once more, cleaned the transmission, repaired an innnertube and adjusted the hydraulic brake.

In the meantime Es had found out that we had missed some important sculptures in the cathedral so we went back for another visit.

After a wee nap, a cup of tea and packing the panniers with fresh laundry it was time for dinner and bed

Long day tomorrow, to the most southern most point of our trip.
