Day 5; Discovering Troyes

 Day 5; 07.07.2021 126 km

The boys who are starting our hotel are now informed that cyclists want to leave early and do not appreciate that their bike is still locked away with nobody at reception at 08.45. Late start of the day at 09.30!

We left Reims and soon had to climb to get over champagne vineyard hills. Yesterday was tough, but the legs were feeling surprisingly good.

After crossing the Marne river the vineyards still continued for at least 50 km after Reims. The world must drink a fair amount of champagne.

The wind was not as strong as yesterday but was still right in front and at times slowing us down considerably.

After 45 km we felt the need for a refreshment. In the champagne fields the villages are quite lively and we could trace a boulangerie. The quality of the patisserie is amazing…

By now the fields were covered with wheat, sunflowers, poppy seeds and sugar beets. To cut a long story short, we had a pretty hard ride to get to the Valley of the Seine at 100 km.

On the banks of the river Seine there was a beautiful cycling path which brought us to the centre of Troyes. We had another photo session in front of the cathedral and locked the tandem. The cathedral which took 1000 years to build is small compared to Reims but still very beautiful. Our lodgings turned out to be just one street away from the cathedral, a very nice courtyard to put the tandem in and a charming little apartment.

Later we went to see the city, it is a stunning old town and practically no (Dutch) tourists.

After a good meal we went home and enjoyed the clocks from the cathedral striking every hour.
