Day 19; cycling from Holland to Belgium

Day 19; cycling from Belgium to Holland

Today was the best breakfast so far, amazing place this NH hotel.

It was a National Holiday in Belgium and the papers were speculating whether or not the King was in a divorce because his wife was not at the ceremony. I think she was bored stiff with ceremonies, I wouldn’t go either if I was spouse to the King.

Leaving a big city is not the best part of a cycling trip, after 15 km we were once again on a towpath that led us out of Antwerpen. We crossed the border at 40 km and had a light lunch just over the border in Holland. Today was a short etappe and we decided to push on to ‘s Hertogenbosch at 100km.

Ben was moaning because the wind was in front again, Esther told him to shut up and stop talking about the wind on a beautiful day. Front wind is now described as the weather condition that shall not be named.

‘s Hertogenbosch was set on the agenda because it has the only serieus  Cathedral in the Netherlands. We looked at it and compared it with the Cathedrals in France we had just visited. It is a not a bad example of gothic cathedral building, somewhat different to its French cousins. It has been the example for building churches in Flanders.

We enjoyed the old city of ‘s Hertogenbosch very much, nice to look at your own country with new eyes.

The local speciality is the Bossche bol, a choux bun with chocolate coating. Eating only one will drive your cholesterol levels 2 point up. The one on the picture is a half size example.

We had dinner next to the cathedral in a hipster tent, first completely vegan dinner in a long time.

During dinner; discussing what was the most difficult day and where we had the best hotel/dinner.

Tomorrow our last stage, 115 km to our hometown and crossing 3 rivers that have broken their banks due to the recent flooding in the southern parts of the Netherlands and Belgium. I hope we can use the route that has been sent to our Garmins 5 minutes ago…..
